My visit to Port Harcourt Zoo was a mixed experience. On the positive side, the animals present appeared well-fed and relatively healthy. It was also noticeable that there is a level of familiarity between the animals and the zookeeper, which suggests consistent care and interaction. However, the overall condition of the facility requires significant improvement. Many of the animal enclosures are visibly dilapidated, and the general environment appears unkempt and overgrown. Additionally, there was a high presence of mosquitoes, which made the visit somewhat uncomfortable. The zoo also has a limited number of animals, which may affect the overall visitor experience, especially for first-time guests expecting a wider variety. There is clear potential for this location to become a more attractive recreational and educational space. With proper maintenance, restructuring, and investment, it could significantly improve. It would be beneficial for the Rivers State Ministry of Tourism.
